Prepaid packages: money held for sessions you haven’t had
A package trades a lower price per session for paying before the sessions happen. Until each session is used, the business is holding your money for a treatment it hasn’t given yet.

What the package price per session assumes
The package price divided by its sessions is its price per session — if every session gets used. Stop early, and the sessions you did have cost the whole package price divided by fewer sessions.
Money held, over time
On the day you pay, the business holds the whole price for treatments not yet given. Each session draws that down by one session’s share. The financing calculator draws this as a step chart, from your numbers.
The terms that decide what’s left
- Expiry: when unused sessions stop being usable
- Refunds: none, prorated, or not stated — and at which per-session rate a prorated refund is worked out
- Transfers: whether someone else may use the sessions
- Pauses: what happens if you have to stop for a while
- Closure: what happens to prepaid sessions if the business closes or changes owners
Pace against expiry
Space the sessions the way the treatment plan describes and count when the last one falls. If it falls after the expiry date, the plan and the package disagree, and the package’s terms are the ones that get enforced.
Worked example · hypothetical figures
Six sessions for $1,800, one a month, expiring after four months
Sessions at months 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. The package expires at month 4. No refunds.
- Package price per session
- $300
- Sessions that fit before expiry at this pace
- 5 of 6
- Unused at expiry
- $300
- Stop after session 2: unused
- $1,200
- Stop after session 2: what each session had cost
- $900
The package is $300 a session only in the version of events where all six happen in time.
The figures are invented to keep the arithmetic easy to follow. They aren’t typical prices, and nothing here says what a price should be.
Questions to ask
- 1When do unused sessions expire, and is that date in writing?
- 2If I stop, is anything refunded — and at what per-session rate?
- 3Can sessions be paused, or transferred to someone else?
- 4What happens to prepaid sessions if the business closes or changes owners?
- 5Does the plan’s spacing fit inside the expiry date?
