What “clinically proven” should come with

Which study, on how many people, compared with what, using this product or device at these settings, and whether it was ever published.

Wording it covers

The claim reader flags phrases like these, wherever they appear in an ad:

  • “clinically proven”
  • “clinically tested”
  • “studies show”
  • “science-backed”
  • “proven results”

What would back it up

  • The citation: journal, year, authors
  • How many people, and whether there was a comparison group
  • Whether the study used this exact product or device, and this protocol
  • Who paid for it

The question to ask

Which study? Can you send me the citation, and did it use this exact product or device?

Can it be checked?

Could be measured. This is a real question with a real answer. Ask it, and ask for the answer in writing.

Outcome. A statement about the result. Ask what is measured, by whom, and against what.
